Tom Mendoza is a highly-sought keynote speaker and expert covering such topics as strategy, business, leadership, management, problem solving, workplace culture, and employee engagement. He is a best-selling author, consultant, media pundit, and thought-leader who has spoken at many conferences around the world where he gives leaders the skills they need to deal with fast, big changes in society, the workplace, and education.
Tom Mendoza is hired to speak at events and conferences where he can give expertise on important global business affairs. He is the former Vice Chairman at NetApp. He joined in 1994 and was responsible for sales until becoming president in 2000. In 2009, he became vice chairman. In that same year NetApp was voted the #1 company in America to work for (and was in the top 10 places to work for more than a decade). NetApp competes in the computer data storage hardware industry and in 2019, Gartner named NetApp as number 1 in primary storage. Mr. Mendoza established a culture that led to NetApp being ranked number 1 in Fortune Magazine’s 100 best companies to work for as early as 2009. He was also a recipient of the Morgan Stanley Leadership Award for global commerce.
Mr. Mendoza retired from NetApp in 2019 and currently serves on the boards of Vast Data, UiPath, Varonis, ServiceSource, and Arxan. He has also been significantly involved with the Pat Tillman Foundation, St. Baldrick’s Foundation, The Navy Seal Foundation, and serves on the Justin Tuck’s Rush Foundation for children’s literacy. Mr. Mendoza frequently speaks on corporate culture and leadership to a wide variety of audiences, which have included major universities such as Stanford University, Notre Dame, Harvard, the United States Military Academy, as well as to diverse groups such as the US Marine Corps, and has given keynotes at Oracle World and numerous other industry events.
Tom has given talks on the power of corporate culture and leadership all over the world to people in such diverse organizations as the U.S. Marine Corps, West Point, CIO forums, Oracle’s Leaders Circle, and Stanford University. In 2009 he was the corecipient with NetApp Chairman Dan Warmenhoven of the Morgan Stanley Leadership Award for Global Commerce.
Tom holds a BA degree from the University of Notre Dame and is an alumnus of Stanford University’s Executive Business Program. In September 2000 Notre Dame renamed its business school the Mendoza College of Business after an endowment made by Tom.
Background
When Tom Mendoza began a sales career back in the 1970s, he had no idea — or expectation — that he would eventually become president of a technology firm with $3.3 billion in revenue, or go on to serve as its vice chairman. “The best decision that I ever made was to start my career in sales. Nothing starts in a company until something is sold,” he says.
