Sarah Silverman is an American stand-up comedian, actress, singer, and writer. Her comedy addresses social taboos and controversial topics, such as racism, sexism, and religion, sometimes having her characters enact skits that are offensive to a particular group. She also has a satirical and self-deprecating persona.

Silverman was born and raised in Bedford, New Hampshire. She began performing as a stand-up comedian at age 17, and first gained widespread attention as a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live. She went on to star in and produce several films and television series, including The Sarah Silverman Program and Wreck-It Ralph. For her work on television, she has won two Primetime Emmy Awards.

Silverman has also released two comedy albums, Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! and We Are Miracles, which earned her a Grammy Award nomination. She currently stars on the Hulu series I Love You, America.

Early life

Sarah Silverman was born on December 1, 1970, in Bedford, New Hampshire, to Beth Ann (née Halpin) and Donald Silverman. She was raised in a Jewish family. Her parents divorced when she was two years old, and she was raised by her mother. As a child, Silverman was occasionally exposed to antisemitism from other children in her neighborhood, but was mostly sheltered by her family.

Silverman attended Hebrew school and had a Bat Mitzvah. She later attended The Derryfield School, a private preparatory school in Manchester, New Hampshire. She has described herself as “very introverted” and “a loner” in her youth.

Career

Silverman began her comedy career as a teenager. She first performed as a stand-up comedian at age 17, at an open mic night at Stitches Comedy Club in Manhattan.

Silverman was first hired as a writer for Saturday Night Live in 1993. She was fired after one season, but was later rehired as a featured player. She became a full-fledged cast member the following year.

Silverman’s film career began in 1996 with a small role in Who’s the Caboose?, a documentary about the early days of the sketch comedy group The State. She went on to appear in several films, including Bulworth (1998), Say It Isn’t So (2001), School of Rock (2003), The Aristocrats (2005), and Wreck-It Ralph (2012).

In 2007, Silverman starred in and produced The Sarah Silverman Program, a comedy series on Comedy Central. The show was canceled after three seasons.

In 2014, Silverman began starring in the Hulu series I Love You, America, a comedy talk show in which she discusses current events with people from all walks of life.

Silverman has also released two comedy albums, Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! (2002) and We Are Miracles (2013). The latter earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Comedy Album.
