Robyn Benincasa is an American actor, race car driver, and a motivational speaker who is best known for founding the Project Athena, which helps women with medical challenges achieve their athletic goals. Born in San Diego, California, she is most well-known for her endurance racing career, which has won her many awards and recognitions. She holds three Guinness World Records in long-distance kayaking and has competed in 10 Ironman races and 36 expedition-length adventure races.
Athletic Career
Benincasa was a San Diego firefighter and became an endurance racer as well as a triathlete. She was part of the second American team that completed the Raid Gauloises adventure racing in 1995. She was part of the Mountain Dew-sponsored team that participated in the Discovery Channel Eco-Challenge, Queensland, Australia, 1997. She was part of the Eco-Internet team in 1999 and 2000 and helped win that team’s first place in 2000.
In 2001, she was forced to quit the team due to asthma complications from exercise and altitude in a race in Switzerland. After being treated, she was able to rejoin Team Earthlink. This team had lost one of its members during the 2001 Eco-Challenge in New Zealand. Benincasa finished fourth, while Team Earthlink came in fourth.
Business Career
Colorado Adventure Training was founded by Benincasa and Ian Adamson (a fellow-firefighter, Eco-Internet teammate, and ultra-marathoner) in 1998. They combined their endurance racing experience to create team-building experiences that encourage participants and others to ask for help.
Benincasa broke off her relationship with Eco-Internet in 2001 after Adamson dropped Benincasa. Later, she founded Human Synergy, Inc., which focuses on corporate team building. It uses a framework called “Eight Essential Elements for Human Synergy.” She published How Winning Works: Eight Essential Leadership Lessons from the Toughest Teams on Earth in 2012.
Benincasa was first diagnosed with osteoarthritis back in 2007. She was then told she might never be able to continue running. She was determined to keep her athletic pursuits going and underwent hip resurfacing surgery.
She ran the Sedona marathon four months later. After her recovery, she started Project Athena, which is a non-profit organization that supports women in pursuing their athletic goals after they have suffered setbacks. CNN honored Benincasa as a CNN Hero in 2014 for her work with Project Athena and the 140 women it had supported.
Guinness Records
Benincasa holds three Guinness World Records. The first Guinness World Record she held was for the longest distance a woman can paddle or kayak on flat water. Benincasa established a Guinness World Record in 2011 for the longest distance a woman canoes or kayaks have covered on moving water.
She paddled 371.10 miles (371.92 km) along the Yukon River in Canada. In 2014, she set her third Guinness Record for the longest distance a woman can paddle a stand-up paddleboard in still water. She covered 146 km (91 mi) in total. Her paddle laps around Huntington Harbor, Huntington Beach, California, achieved this feat.
