As a young man, Rick Kirschner was born in Cincinnati. After completing his Bachelor’s studies in Human Biology at Northern Kentucky University, he pursued a Ph.D. in Naturopathic Medicine at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, where he attended for four years (N.D.).
He learned therapeutic communication from a local doctor while in medical school. “The Magical Nature of Communication” was a training course he co-developed with a friend in 1980 and made available to other students. His speaking & training career was born out of this experience over the next few years as the training became increasingly popular across the west coast.
From Portland’s National College of Naturopathic Medicine, he received his naturopathic medical degree in 1981. When R&R Productions, a training company, was founded in the same year, he established it as a co-founder. He focused on stress-related illness and the mind-body connection as treatment in his private practice.
The Biggest training company in the world, CareerTrack Inc., invited him to conduct training in 1986. When he retired from private practice in 1987, he decided to devote all of his time to public speaking and training, where he consistently received high marks from audiences. CareerTrack’s bestselling audio program, How To Interact With Difficult People (which went on to produce the Columbia House Top 10 Audio Training list), was co-authored by him in 2013.
The Tom Peters Group selected him to deliver revolutionary In Search of Excellence training courses to businesses worldwide in the same year. How To Interact With Difficult People, a CareerTrack bestseller from 1988, was co-authored by him. His How To Find & Keep A Mate seminar was the basis for an audio and video program he produced in 1988 and 1989. He wrote The Happiness of Pursuit, a video program for CareerTrack, in 1990 to help people find a better work-life balance. In 1992, he left CareerTrack and founded his own consulting, training, and speaking business, which he integrated in 2004.
Talking to People, You Hate: How to Bring Out Positive at Their Worst was published by McGraw Hill in 1994. In 2002, the book’s second edition was published, and it has since become an international bestseller, appearing in two editions and 20 different languages. Used it to teach the fundamentals of conflict resolution in businesses and educational institutions alike.
In 2004, he established Art of Change LLC, redesigned it, and began offering businesses and other organizations his accumulated knowledge and experience as Art of Change Skills For LifeTM speeches, training, and coaching. Leadership, teamwork, and healthy living are just topics covered in the courses offered.
Hyperion Books signed him to a publishing contract in 2007, which was also a first for him. “How to Click With People: The Secret of Better Relationship issues in Business And Life” is now available in bookstores.
Natural Medicine Institute’s Interim President Rick came out of retirement in 2019 to host The Vital Conversation and guide the organization through a tumultuous 2020 before returning to retirement in January of 2021, leaving the NMI in skillful hands.
