He is a best-selling author, consultant, media pundit, and thought-leader who has spoken at many conferences around the world where he gives leaders the skills they need to deal with fast, big changes in society, the workplace, and education.
Richard Barton is hired to speak at events and conferences where he can give expertise on important global business affairs. He is the founder & CEO of zillow.com. Before creating Zillow.com, Barton founded the online travel site Expedia. Expedia was started within Microsoft in 1994, then spun out of Microsoft in 1999. Barton served as the President, Chief Executive Officer, and a Director until March 2003. By that time, Expedia had grown to become the largest online seller of travel in the world.
As the CEO Zillow, Rich leads the company’s work to transform how people buy, sell, rent and finance homes. Rich co-founded Zillow in 2005 and served as CEO until 2010, when he became the company’s executive chairman. He returned as CEO in early 2019.
Before Zillow, Rich founded Expedia within Microsoft in 1994 and successfully spun it out as a public company in 1999. He served as president, CEO and board director of Expedia from 1999 to 2003. He also co-founded and served as non-executive chairman of Glassdoor from 2007 to 2018.
After Zillow was founded in 2004, he served as CEO for six years before shifting roles to become the Executive Chairman. In February 2019, Barton returned to his role as Zillow Group’s CEO.
Barton also serves as a venture partner at Benchmark Capital and has served on the board of multiple companies including Netflix, Avvo, Year Up, and Qurate Retail Group.
From 1991 to 1994, Barton worked in various product management roles at Microsoft. He holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University.
Barton currently serves on the Stanford School of Engineering Advisory Council and the School of Humanities and Sciences Ethics, Society and Technology Task Force and as chair of the Seattle Advisors. Previously, he served on the Bing Overseas Studies Program Council, the Think Again Seattle Steering Committee and the major gifts regional committees for the Campaign for Undergraduate Education and The Stanford Challenge. He has also volunteered for Leading Matters Seattle and his undergraduate reunions.
In 2004, Barton and his wife formed the Barton Family Foundation with initial efforts focused on funding education and mentoring programs for at-risk youth in Seattle. The foundation has since shifted its concentration to criminal justice reform and social justice.
Barton is also a member of the boards of Netflix, Qurate and Artsy. He previously served on boards including Nextdoor, Ticketmaster, IAC, Common Sense Media and Year Up Puget Sound.
Barton earned his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, with a focus on industrial economics, from Stanford.
