Speaker Bio

Pete Sampras was born on August 12, 1971, in Washington, D.C., to Greek immigrants Sotirios and Georgia Sampras. He has two older sisters, Stella and Vicki. His father was a construction worker who had emigrated from Sparta, Greece, in 1957, and his mother was a homemaker. The family moved to Los Angeles when Sampras was three, and he began playing tennis at age six.

Sampras quickly developed a reputation as a tennis prodigy. He won his first tournament at age seven, and by age eleven he was ranked number one in the boys’ 12-and-under division in Southern California. Sampras’s first coach was Robert Lansdorp, who also coached future stars Tracy Austin and Lindsay Davenport. Under Lansdorp’s tutelage, Sampras honed his serve-and-volley game and became a dominant player on the junior circuit. He won the national championship in the boys’ 14-and-under division in 1985, and in 1986 he became the youngest player ever to win the U.S. Open junior title.

Sampras turned professional in 1988, at the age of sixteen. He made his Grand Slam debut at the U.S. Open that year, but lost in the first round. The following year, Sampras won his first professional tournament, in Schenectady, New York. He reached the quarterfinals of the French Open in 1990, but lost to eventual champion Andres Gomez.

Sampras’s breakthrough came at the 1991 U.S. Open. Seeded twelfth, he defeated defending champion and top-seeded Stefan Edberg in the quarterfinals. Sampras then upset fourth-seeded Jim Courier in the semifinals before defeating fellow American Andre Agassi in the final. The victory made Sampras the youngest men’s singles champion in U.S. Open history.

Sampras went on to win Wimbledon in 1992, defeating Goran Ivanisevic in the final. He also won the U.S. Open that year, defeating Courier in the final. Sampras successfully defended his Wimbledon title in 1993, defeating Courier in the final. He also won the Australian Open that year, defeating Courier in the final.

Sampras’s dominance continued into 1994. He won Wimbledon for the third straight year, defeating Ivanisevic in the final. He also won the U.S. Open, defeating Agassi in the final. Sampras did not lose a match from the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 1993 until the semifinals of the 1995 French Open, a span of thirty-one matches.

Sampras’s streak came to an end in the 1995 French Open semifinals, where he lost to Michael Stich. Sampras rebounded to win Wimbledon for the fourth time in 1996, defeating MaliVai Washington in the final. He also won the U.S. Open that year, defeating Courier in the final.

Sampras’s run of Grand Slam titles came to an end at the 1997 French Open, where he lost to Gustavo Kuerten in the semifinals. He rebounded to win Wimbledon for the fifth time in 1997, defeating Cédric Pioline in the final. He also won the U.S. Open that year, defeating Alex Corretja in the final.

Sampras’s sixth and final Wimbledon title came in 1998, when he defeated Goran Ivanisevic in the final. He also won the U.S. Open that year, defeating Kuerten in the final.

Sampras’s final Grand Slam victory came at the 2002 U.S. Open, when he defeated Agassi in the final. He announced his retirement from tennis in 2003.

Sampras is widely considered to be one of the greatest tennis players of all time. He won fourteen Grand Slam singles titles, more than any other male player in the history of the sport. He also won a record seven Wimbledon singles titles. Sampras was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2007.
