Crenshaw’s work focuses on intersectionality, the ways in which multiple forms of discrimination, such as race and gender, interact and overlap. She is best known for coining the term “intersectionality” in her 1989 paper, “Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Antiracist Politics.” In this seminal work, Crenshaw argues that traditional legal approaches to addressing discrimination against black women are inadequate because they do not take into account the ways in which race and gender interact to create unique experiences of oppression.

Some of her most notable publications include “Mapping the Margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence Against Women of Color” (1994), “Critical Race Theory: The Key Writings That Formed the Movement” (1995), and “Race, Reform, and Retrenchment: Transformation and Legitimation in Anti-Discrimination Law” (2001).

In 2019, Crenshaw was honored as the recipient of the Fulbright Lifetime Achievement Medal, which is granted by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to international understanding and problem-solving through their scholarly, research, or professional activities.
