Speaker Bio

Judy Sorum Brown is a highly-sought motivational speaker and expert covering such topics as leadership, change, education, and creativity. She is a best-selling author, consultant, media pundit, and thought-leader who has spoken at many conferences around the world where she gives leaders the skills they need to deal with fast, big changes in society, the workplace, and schools.

Judy Sorum Brown is hired to speak at events and conferences where she can give expertise on important global business affairs. She has worked as a White House Fellow, a Special Assistant to the US Secretary of Labor, Chief Financial Officer, Assistant Dean, and Director of Executive Programs at the University of Maryland’s College of Business & Management, & Vice President for Seminars and Cooperative Programs at the Aspen Institute. She went to Michigan State University and got her Ph.D. there.

Dr. Brown is a Senior Fellow of the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership and teaches leadership at the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland.

She was indeed a founding consultant member of the Society for Organizational Learning, a community of practice based on the theories and practices of the five disciplines of the Learning Organization. Peter Senge, an MIT professor, was the first person to work in these fields.

At the start of her long career in the auto industry, a senior Ford executive asked her to lead a team that was making a four-week program for engineers and managers to improve their skills. Because of this training, she worked with teams at manufacturing plants to shift from traditional manufacturing to “lean manufacturing” regarding management and culture.

Ford, Canon, The United Way, The Girl Scouts of America, The World Bank, Chrysler, Sprint, AT&T, Herman Miller, and some non-profit and government organizations were her clients.

Even when there is conflict, chaos, and complexity, she helps organizations find common ground. She calls herself a “thinking partner” or “learning partner,” but others may think of her as a professor, public speaker, educator, or poet.

Her whole body of work is about helping people remember their essence and underlying principles to connect with what is real in others and themselves and find common ground at work. A big part of her work is conversation, which gives people the tools to build thinking-based learning structures (usually in the workplace) that help them deal with cultural, emotional, & spiritual challenges professionally and peacefully.

Her knowledge of agriculture and cooperative extension has taught her that she can use ideas, theories, research, and science to make our lives and work better. She is from the small town of Leland, which is in northwest Michigan and has a few fishermen.

She has been putting together leadership, education, and creativity as a framework for lasting change, a kind of change that makes people want to get involved even when things are hard. She helped with the book Learning Organizations (Renesch and Chawla). The Choice, A Leader’s Guide to Reflective Practice, The Art & Spirit of Leadership, and two collections of poetry, The Sea Accepts All Rivers and Simple Gifts, are all books she wrote and published herself. In August 2014, she wrote a book with eight other people called “Flourishing Enterprise: The New Spirit of Business.”

She likes organizational systems that combine thought and inquiry because she is a Quaker. As a writer and poet, she is interested in how language and metaphor can change our ideas and help us see things in new ways. As a business leader, she is interested in how leaders keep their energy, sense of direction, and a sense of purpose. She is especially interested in the mechanisms behind the experiences of expanding awareness and also how they help us use our energy effectively for metaphysical, social, and organizational goals.
