After Dimon turned around the failing Bank One in the Midwest by cutting costs and being careful with money, the most interesting part of his life was still to come.
Bank One was the 6th largest bank in the United States. It had assets worth $320 billion. It did consumer, business, and commercial banking, lease financing, investment management, brokerage, insurance, and consumer lending, such as mortgage loans and student loans, in the US and around a dozen other countries. The company had 1,800 locations in 14 states, most of which were in the Midwest and Southeast. Bank One was one of the biggest companies in the world to give out credit cards, and it had about 52 million active cards and $74 billion in receivables. In January 2004, Dimon worked out a plan to merge Bank One and J.P. Morgan Chase & Company of New York. Banks needed each other to compete on a global scale and especially to keep up with Citigroup, the biggest financial services company in the world, in 2003, making a little more than $100 billion in profits. The headquarters of the new company would be in New York, but some of its retail operations would be in Chicago. It is thought that Dimon has a net worth of $1.8 billion. When the financial crisis hit in 2008, his bank was safe because he sold $12 billion of subprime loans in 2006. Before President Trump’s policy forum was dissolved in August 2017, Dimon was a member of it.Rumors of him being considered for the position of Treasury Secretary also circulated. Dimon’s family history seemed to have set him up for a career in the brokerage business. His grandfather was a Greek immigrant born in Smyrna and worked as a broker. He taught his son and business partner, Theodore Dimon, how to do the job. Jamie Dimon’s dad and grandfather worked together for 19 years, and Dimon spent the summer vacation at their office in New York.
