James P. Womack is a highly-sought keynote speaker and expert covering such topics as management, leadership, productivity, and manufacturing. He is a best-selling author, consultant, media pundit, and thought-leader who has spoken at many conferences around the world where he gives leaders the skills they need to deal with fast, big changes in society, the workplace, and schools.

Lean Thinking (2003, Free Press) was written by D. Jones and looked at Toyota’s lean design philosophy. The Machine That Changed The World (2007, Free Press) was written by D. Jones and D. Roos. His Lean Enterprise Institute works with many groups that want to use similar ideas worldwide.

The Lean Enterprise Institute, Inc. is led by James P. Womack, Ph.D., a non-profit organization for training, publishing, conferences, and management research. It was founded in August 1997 to promote lean production and lean Thinking, which were first based on Toyota’s business system and are now part of an entire lean management system. Womack is also the most experienced advisor for the group.

In the last 20 years, Womack and Daniel Jones have written some books and articles together. These books and articles provide the intellectual foundation for the Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Womack got his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Chicago in 1970, his master’s degree in transportation systems from Harvard in 1975, and his Ph.D. in political science from MIT in 1982. From 1975 to 1991, he worked full-time as a research scientist at MIT, overseeing many reviews of how things were made around the world. As the research director of MIT’s International Motor Vehicle Program, Womack oversaw the team of researchers who came up with the term “lean production” to describe how Toyota organizes its business.

Dr. James P. Womack started the Lean Enterprise InstituteSM and is now its president. The Lean Enterprise InstituteSM is a non-profit teaching and research organization that was started in 1997 to promote the ideas of “lean manufacturing” and “lean thinking.” James is working on some research projects at the Institute to make a toolkit of lean thinking methods that business leaders can use to make decisions. The Institute also puts on several educational events throughout the year and promotes the use of lean Thinking in new industries like construction, distribution, and healthcare.
