Speaker Bio

Fred Hochberg is a government leader who is highly-sought business keynote speaker that covers such topics as finances, banking, trade, and LGBTQ rights. During the Obama administration, he led enterprises to new heights and better positions to prosper in the twenty-first-century economy.

In the fall of 2017, he was a Pritzker fellow at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics, where he led a class on international trade policy. Hochberg recently finished his tenure as the longest-serving Chairman of the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM). By managing the institution through extraordinary economic difficulties and political resistance. During Hochberg’s eight-year stint as EXIM administrator, the agency supported more than 1.4 million American employment, financed exports worth more than $240 billion, and earned $3.8 billion in surplus money for U.S. taxpayers. Hochberg brought a client-centric perspective to the Bank, encouraging the organization to meet the requirements of American businesses. And especially small company exporters, through product innovation and enhanced customer service.

Before becoming Chairman and President of EXIM, Hochberg was Dean of the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy at the New School in New York City. Here he increased the school’s visibility, oversaw the development of a core curriculum, and improved the school’s finances. Hochberg was Deputy Administrator and later Acting Administrator of the Small Business Administration during the Clinton Administration. He focused on increasing financing to women and minority-owned small businesses and developing a new loan processing technology for the agency.

Before his government service and academic career, Hochberg led his family’s direct marketing business, Lillian Vernon, for 18 years, during which time the company’s yearly sales increased from $5 million to $180 million. Hochberg expanded the company’s product line, helping the brand become a household name, and went public in 1987. He is a former Board Commissioner for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Citizens Budget Commission, as well as a Board member for FINCA International Micro Finance. He also served on the New York State Financial Control Board.

Hochberg served as a board member and then as co-chair of the Human Rights Campaign, the United States’ most prominent LGBT rights advocacy organization. He also established the David Bohnett LGBT Leadership Fellows Scholarship at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

His book, Trade Is Not a Four-Letter Word provides valuable insight into the current state of trade. Trade Is Not a Four-Letter Word offers essential insight into the current status of the trade. The book has been making headlines in The Wall Street Journal and The Hill, and Hochberg has been in high demand for interviews with NPR, and Bloomberg. It debunks the myth that trade is more difficult to understand than Washington or the media would have us believe, and it does so with digestible and compelling examples.

Hochberg discredits common trade myths and reveals surprising lessons on how trade has shaped our lives. And how it can be used to build a better future by telling the incredible stories of six everyday products (the taco salad, the Honda Odyssey, the banana, the iPhone, the college degree, and HBO’s Game of Thrones). Hochberg gives an optimistic perspective on trade, highlighting how it has been used as a scapegoat for struggling economies and our inability to adapt to a changing world when trade uncertainty dominates the news and trade policy is a White House priority. Hochberg provides the remedy to today’s acronym-laden trade language and equips audiences with a comprehensive understanding of why trade is vital to our economy and way of life.
