Eric O’Neill is a keynote speaker on cybersecurity, a former FBI counterintelligence and counterterrorism agent, the bestselling author of Gray Day, and the basis for the film Breach. Eric assisted in the capture of Robert Phillip Hanssen, the most famous spy in the history of the United States. Eric is also the creator of The Georgetown Group, a top investigative and security services organization, and serves as the National Protection Strategist for Carbon Black, the market leader in next-generation endpoint security. Eric has worked with Fortune 1000 organizations and critical customers such as TIAA and AT&T.
Robert Hanssen, a 25-year FBI veteran, was the most notorious spy in United States history, and Eric O’Neill assisted in his capture. His extraordinary life experiences inspired the critically acclaimed starring Ryan Philippe, dramatic thriller Breach as O’Neill, and his best-selling novel Gray Day. The film set within the FBI — the custodian of the nation’s most delicate and possibly explosive secrets – recounts the security breach in American history.
Before Hanssen’s arrest, O’Neill collaborated with the spy in the FBI’s information assurance section, safeguarding all sensitive intelligence. O’Neill acquired Hanssen’s trust and gradually drew the traitor out of deep cover by leveraging their friendship.
O’Neill started his FBI career after completing the FBI’s Intelligence Program. He spent five years of employment as a field agent for a particular surveillance organization entrusted with national monitoring of foreign and local Pies and terrorists. He shifted from field operation to direct Hanssen-focused undercover activity. Although his previous training had emphasized “ghosting” targets from the shadows, he committed Hanssen in conversation to elicit the information necessary to catch him in the act of spying. O’Neill was required to draw upon deep stores of fortitude and self-assurance to combat Hanssen’s mind games and aggressive probing, as well as to “stop reacting to Hanssen and start acting.”
Eric O’Neill is currently the National Security Strategist for VMWare-Carbon Black, a leader in next-generation endpoint protection. He will work to guarantee that he delivers advice and insight on strategic cyber-security concerns and that VMWare-Carbon Black is an active participant in the conversation about the national cybersecurity strategy. Eric is also a creating partner of The Georgetown Group, a premier investigative and security consultancy based in Washington, D.C. He focuses on counterintelligence operations, economic espionage investigations, cybersecurity penetrations, internal investigations, catching the trustworthy insider, and risk assessment consultancy.
The story of O’Neill is one of patriotism, courageous action in the face of fear, and learning to keep confidence in one’s abilities even when victory appears unachievable. His tale has been told in national media, including Hardball with Chris Mathews, 20/20, Fox News Power Player of the Week, CSPAN’s Washington Journal, Nightline, NPR’s “Fresh Air with Terry Gross,” CNN, MTV, World News Now, and Access Hollywood.
Eric O’Neill, a gifted inspirational speaker who integrates real-world experiences into a presentation that is amusing and enlightening, gives industry-relevant, practical insights into real-world work scenarios. In addition to his expertise in the Hanssen case, eric addresses patriotism and confidence in the trouble to the United States security posed by terrorism, the cyber hazard to our national infrastructure, foreign intelligence services, and the national conscience in a monitored society. He also assists boards with the proposed SEC requirement for cyber expertise.
