Ed Catmull is a highly-sought business, tech, and innovation keynote speaker and thought leader in the world of animation and computer graphics. As a computer scientist, he co-founded Pixar Animation Studios and was also the president of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Previously, Dr. Catmull served as the vice president of Lucasfilm Ltd.’s Computer Division, where he oversaw projects in digital audio, video editing, and computer graphics.
Professor Ed Catmull developed three of the most important institutes for computer graphics research: the computer graphics laboratory at the New York Institute of Technology, Lucasfilm’s computer division, and Pixar. They have housed some renowned researchers and created some essential innovations in graphics, such as motion blur, image compositing, and subdivision surfaces. The z-buffer and Texture mapping have also been developed at these organizations. This software, developed by Dr. Catmull, has been utilized in 44 out of the previous 47 films nominated for an Academy Awards in the category of Visual Effects.
Since 1978, with the IEEE’s Computer Society, Dr. Catmull has also been a member of several other professional organizations. He is an ACM Fellow and has been an active part of the ACM SIGGRAPH conference for many years, serving on the Papers Committee, the Awards Committee, and the Technical Program Committee. It’s also worth noting that Catmull is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and the Visual Effects Society (VES). Dr. Catmull was named a Visual Effects Society Fellow in 2012 in honor of his contributions to computer graphics and visual effects as both an artist and a scientist.
Among Dr. Catmull’s five Academy Awards are the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Technical Achievement Award, which he previously won twice, as well as the Academy’s Award of Merit. This award was given to Dr. Catmull in 2009 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his lifetime of accomplishments and leadership in computer graphics for motion picture production.
Additionally, Dr. Catmull was awarded the ACM SIGGRAPH Steven A. Coons Award for his lifetime contributions in the computer graphics area, Fuji Gold Medal and Progress Medal, and the animation industry’s Ub Iwerks Award for technical advancements in the art or industry of animation. Aside from that, he was honored with the IEEE’s John von Neumann Medal for his groundbreaking work in computer graphics and film animation.
The Carnegie Mellon University Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) awarded Dr. Catmull the 2008 Randy Pausch Recognition, a prize for persons in the entertainment technology business who best represent technical expertise and creative thought. At the 7th International Conference on Entertainment Computing (ICEC), Dr. Catmull was also the keynote speaker.
Don Marinelli and Randy Pausch, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, selected Dr. Catmull as the first recipient of this medal. As a result of his developing work in computer-generated imagery for the motion picture business, Dr. Catmull was honored with the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers’ Progress Medal in 2011.
The University of Utah awarded Dr. Catmull a BS in physics and computer science and a Ph.D. in computer science. He received an honorary doctorate in engineering from the University of Utah in 2005.
Co-authored with journalist Amy Wallace, Dr. Catmull’s book Creativity, Inc.: Overcoming the Unseen Forces That Stand in the Way of True Inspiration is a synthesis of the management principles and ideas he has employed to cultivate a creative culture.
