Speaker Bio

Born in Zambia, Dambisa Moyo is an economist and writer who has dedicated much of her time to studying the causes of poverty in the global society and seeking out ways to address them. Much of her work focuses on how foreign relations and leadership roles between how many states connect and influence each other around Africa. In contrast, others focus on more established societies such as the United States and China and how they affect African economies through their control over critical resources.

She holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in economics from Oxford University, a master’s degree from the Harvard Kennedy School and a Master of Business Administration degree from American University. She worked briefly as a country economist for the World Bank before returning to school at Harvard University. She obtained a doctorate in economics, concentrating on development studies, and her dissertation was on savings rates in developing countries.

Dambisa Moyo argues that the current way of doing aid is not working. She argues that support is worse than doing nothing. She suggests in her book that we should invest in trade, not aid. She stresses this point and gives excellent examples to explain how business works and how it would be able to benefit the continent better.

Her analysis is sound, and she offers actual examples to back her point. She explains the theory behind aid and weaves economics with social sciences. She gives excellent examples of making trade work in Africa and how Africa can develop. She describes how various other countries were able to create themselves through trade and argues that Africa has a lot of potential.

In her book Edge of Chaos, modern corporate governance is best by issues Dambisa Moyo examines. She also discusses the nature of boards themselves and compares them to other councils around the globe. In the process, she offers valuable conclusions that could just as well be used to reform other institutions in the U.S. For example, she writes that the current practice of having corporate executives and directors on the same board is a severe flaw in the system. The study of the functioning of corporate boards is fascinating. Moyo is interested in how the boards operate and whether the panels fulfill their intended role. Instead of focusing on the CEO’s job or the company’s operational success, she focuses on the organization’s board of directors’ management.

Edge of Chaos references the fact that Africa is often referred to as the “Edge of Chaos” because of the stereotypical political turmoil that plagues the continent. This award-winning book is an insightful journey into Africa’s situation and the role that foreign aid can play in promoting peace and prosperity in the region. Following an in-depth analysis of Africa’s progress it ultimately argues that Africa can leapfrog over the West and avoid the development of a cycle of poverty.

It is by providing a context of developing economies emerging into the global marketplace and discussing how Africa has the opportunity to accelerate this process. The author also relates how a suitable foreign policy can help achieve peace and prosperity in Africa. An essential section of the book details the importance of allowing for the development of free markets and encourages us to distinguish between free markets and free trade. Free markets allow for self-determination and ownership, while free trade used to promote the political interests of individual governments.
