Cynthia Marshall is a powerful figure in sports and business. As CEO of the Dallas Mavericks, she is the first black female CEO in NBA history. This career has taken Marshall from the world of marketing to the top echelons of corporate America. A former cheerleader at UC Berkeley, Tracy Marshall is one of the most recognized and decorated NBA executives.
Following her appointment as interim CEO of the Dallas Mavericks, Marshall has laid out her plan for transforming the team’s dysfunctional culture and improving operational effectiveness. She will also focus on employee complaints and the systems in place to handle them.
Cynt Marshall is a highly respected leader. She has received numerous honors, including being named one of Adweek’s 30 Most Powerful Women in Sports, being recognized as a 2019 Woman of Power Legacy Award Honoree by Black Enterprise and the Network Journal.
She also received the ATHENA Leadership Program Award for outstanding women who have contributed to their communities and developed the next generation of women leaders. The award is presented by several women’s organizations, chambers of commerce and universities worldwide.

Her first job was in high heels and her hair was braided. She quickly took off the braids and changed into more neutral shoes. She emphasized the importance of diversity and inclusion and encouraged the audience to be authentic and assertive.
History
Cynthia Marshall was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on February 28th, 1963. She is the oldest of three siblings, and her father was a civil rights lawyer who fought for desegregation in the South. Her mother was a stay-at-home mom who later became a teacher. Cynthia’s parents instilled in her a strong sense of justice and determination, which would serve her well throughout her life.
Cynthia attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned a degree in English. After graduation, she worked as a journalist for The Baltimore Sun. She then went on to earn her law degree from Howard University School of Law.
After graduating from UC Berkeley, Marshall had no trouble finding a job. She received five scholarship offers before choosing one. Although she had initially intended to become a math teacher, she later switched to a major in human resources and business administration. She also became the first Black member of her sorority and cheerleading team. She embraced her new role and learned to integrate with a predominantly white population.
After working as an attorney for several years, Cynthia decided to enter the business world. She joined AT&T in 1996 and quickly rose through the ranks. In 2002, she was named Vice President of Human Resources for AT&T Wireless. In this role, she was responsible for overseeing the company’s employee relations, benefits, and compensation programs.
Cynthia Marshall is a trail blazer because she has achieved success in a male-dominated industry. When she joined AT&T, the company was facing a number of lawsuits alleging discrimination against women and minorities. Cynthia was able to turn the tide at AT&T and create a more inclusive culture.
In 2006, she was named President and CEO of the NAACP. In this role, she worked to increase membership and donations and improve the organization’s image. She also increased its focus on advocacy and activism.
