A successful entrepreneur and keynote speaker, Chris Barton is also a co-founder and former Board Director of Shazam, as well as a specialist in mobile applications. Shazam was co-founded by Barton in London eighteen years ago, and the company was sold to Apple in 2017 for an estimated $400 million. As a co-founder and Board Director at Shazam, he was instrumental in guiding the music discovery firm from conception to profitability.
Chris Barton co-founded Shazam in 1999 with the initial idea of using a mobile phone to detect songs. Shazam is a music identification service. Before the invention of smartphones, individuals could dial a number, hold their phone up to the radio, and receive a text identifying the song being played back.
Shazam had 2 million songs in its database when the firm began in 2002, and it took 15 seconds to process a user’s request at the time of launch. Shazam’s app has been downloaded by more than 1 billion individuals around the world as of today. Now, the app just takes a few seconds to identify music from its library of more than 30 million songs, down from several minutes previously.
For Barton and his co-founders, the path to creating Shazam was a test of faith and endurance. The company managed to survive the dotcom bust, even though it suffered for many years. Chris Barton departed the company in 2004 to join Google and eventually Dropbox, however, he remained on the Board of Directors during his tenure. Only in 2008, with the introduction of the iPhone and Android app stores, did Shazam begin to experience its “hockey stick” growth trajectory.
Shazam is one of the most popular apps on both the iPhone and Android platforms today, with over 120 million monthly active users on both platforms. Shazam’s cutting-edge technology and outstanding customer satisfaction ratings helped persuade Apple to purchase the firm in December 2017.
Beyond Shazam, Chris Barton, who holds an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, a Masters in Finance from Cambridge University, and a BA from the University of California, Berkeley, has worked for Google where he concentrated on the mobile industry, and Dropbox, where he served as the company’s head of mobile operators development.
Previously, Chris worked for Microsoft MSN, News Corp, the San Francisco Consulting Group, and LEK Consulting, among other companies. Barton possesses an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, as well as a Master’s degree in Finance from Cambridge University and a BA from the University of California, Berkeley.
As the company’s initial CEO, Chris oversaw the company’s development from conception to launch, working with three other co-founders to develop a novel pattern recognition technology. His goal was to create and launch the world’s first music identification service, and eventually sell the company.
He currently helps passionate entrepreneurs by giving talks on entrepreneurship and providing assistance to a small number of firms. The technology expert’s passion is all things entrepreneurial and technical, which includes software development. In addition, Barton is preparing to launch his next entrepreneurial enterprise.
