Barkley was born on February 20, 1963 in Leeds, Alabama to Charles Barkley and Mary Barkley Barkley. He was reared by his mother, Johnnie Mae, and father, Frank, in the housing projects. Neither his father nor mother had a traditional job, but both were deacons in their community’s church. Barkley’s big face and fat body were often mocked as a kid. Since his freshman year of high school, he’s been one of Leeds High School’s most sought-after players.

Barkley attended Auburn University after high school. During his first season in the SEC, he was a dominating force, averaging 14.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. As a junior, he was selected SEC Player of the Year and guided Auburn to its first NCAA tournament appearance. After his junior year, Barkley declared for the NBA draft and was taken by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 5th overall choice in 1984.

Barkley immediately rose to prominence in the NBA as a result of his outspoken demeanor and remarkable athleticism. In his first season, he was selected to the All-Star team and then won the NBA MVP title in 1993. During the 1992-93 season, Barkley was moved to the Phoenix Suns, where he helped lead the club to the NBA Finals. For the Houston Rockets, he was moved to the team in 1996, and he retired from the NBA in 2000.

He has been an outspoken opponent of the NBA’s clothing code, and has also spoken out against racism and police violence in the United States. As a philanthropist, Barkley has donated millions of dollars to several organizations throughout the years. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inducted him in 2010.
