Speaker Bio

The former CEO of Kellogg Company, as well as a former Secretary of Commerce, and a former Vice Chairman of Citigroup’s Institutional Clients Group, Carlos Gutierrez brings a wealth of experience to the table.

He started his career selling cereals to local grocers in Mexico City as the son of Cuban immigrants and ascended through the ranks to become the company’s youngest CEO in the company’s 100-year existence. Gutierrez learned English from bellhops when he was younger, but business has always been a subject in which he was proficient.

He was named by Fortune magazine as one of the most influential Hispanic-Americans in business, and he was an outspoken advocate for business in the federal government. As a speaker exclusively represented by the Leading Authorities speakers bureau, he discusses global business, immigration reform, how politics and policy affect business, as well as current political conditions in the world.

Gutierrez began working for Kellogg in 1975 and remained with the company for nearly three decades. He worked his way up the corporate ladder, spending several years as executive vice president of Kellogg’s Asia-Pacific operations.

While serving as CEO, he was confronted with a global standstill in cereal sales. He turned the firm around by implementing his “Volume to Value” approach, which focused resources on higher-margin items. Having spent more than half of his professional life in international markets, he was able to use his Asia expertise to help Kellogg expand its global reach and profitability.

As Fortune magazine put it, Gutierrez was “The Man Who Fixed Kellogg” because he “blended the slick salesmanship, financial discipline, and marketing savvy that he had learned in his youth with disarming charisma, steely resolve, and an utter lack of pretension that you wouldn’t expect from someone who was so nattily dressed.” He even manages to make golf shirts appear debonair.”

The Business Community’s Speak Out in Government. Gutierrez served as Secretary of Commerce under President Bush and was a key part of the president’s economic team. In describing Gutierrez, President Bush remarked, “He has a thorough understanding of the business world, from the bottom of the corporate ladder to the very top.”

He understands exactly what is required to assist American firms in expanding and creating jobs.” When it came to opening global markets for U.S. companies, Gutierrez made it a high priority during his term. As a result, he was instrumental in the implementation of CAFTA-DR, a landmark trade deal that increased opportunities for American exports throughout Latin America.

Financial know-how is essential. In addition to his substantial corporate success, Gutierrez also has a broad international perspective that gives him a unique perspective on global business and trade. Following his tenure as Secretary of Commerce, he joined Citigroup, where he currently serves as vice-chairman of the Institutional Clients Group and as a member of the company’s Senior Strategic Advisory Group.

In addition, he served as an advisor to Gov. Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, was a member of the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Debt Reduction Task Force, and was the founder and chairman of Global Political Strategies (GPS), a strategic consulting firm.

Advocacy for Cuba. As the first-ever nominated chair of the US-Cuba Business Council, an associate of the US Chamber of Commerce, Guttierez is now serving his second term in office. He was born in Havana and has been an outspoken supporter of open, deregulated ties between the United States and Cuba. He has also served as co-chair of the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba (CAFCU). He has also spent a significant amount of time working on immigration issues, having left Citigroup to serve as the founding chairman of the SuperPAC Republican for Immigration Reform.

EmPath, a technology business that employs machine learning to produce employer solutions and prepare individuals and organizations for the future of work, is where he is currently working as co-founder and executive chairman.
