In addition to the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the 9/11 terrorism, Mr. Blythe has been personally involved in crises such as the mass murders at the United States Postal Service, the bombings of the Oklahoma City and Boston Marathons, commercial airline crashes, the rescue of kidnapped or ransom hostages in Columbia and Ecuador, hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, floods, and public relations crises. He provides strategic crisis leadership preparation and response consulting services to a wide range of Fortune 500 executives and management teams.
In addition to being widely recognized as a leading voice in the crisis management and business continuity industries, his book Blindsided: A Manager’s Guide to Crisis Leadership is a best-seller. He has previously served as a member of the Military Police for the United States Marine Corps. A trained clinical psychologist, he has served as a consultant to the FBI on issues relating to workplace violence and terrorist activity.
A formerly CEO of Crisis Management International, Inc., Blythe has also worked as a crisis management consultant and business continuity planner, as well as a former FBI agent and Secret Service agent, among other positions. Throughout his career, he has worked with hundreds of firms in the areas of crisis prevention, preparedness, and response. Besides being a licensed clinical psychologist, he has also worked as a consultant for the FBI on issues such as counterterrorism and workplace violence.
In the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Blythe and CMI provided onsite crisis consultations to more than 200 companies.
They also provided consultations in the aftermath of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, Hurricanes Andrew and Katrina in 1992 and 2005, corporate and commercial air crashes, the Ecuadorian jungle rescue of kidnap and ransom hostages in 2001, a Coca Cola truck/bus crash in Texas that killed 23 school children in 1989, earthquakes in Los Angeles.
Blythe has made numerous appearances on television shows such as NBC’s Today Show, multiple CNN programs, ABC’s 20/20, CBS’s 48 Hours, CNBC, NPR, national talk shows, and many more. Following the events of September 11, 2001, in New York City, Fast Company Magazine ran a cover-story article about Blythe and CMI. In addition to renowned outlets such as The Wall Street Journal and Newsweek, he has also contributed comments to Business Weed, Smart Money, the New Yorker, and USA Today.
Among his many writings on corporate crisis preparedness and response is Blindsided: A Manager’s Guide to Catastrophic Incidents in the Workplace (August 2002), published by Portfolio, an imprint of Penguin Putnam, New York City, which focuses on corporate catastrophe preparedness and reaction.
“Catalyst of the Year 2002” was given to him by Catalyst Magazine in recognition of his contributions to industry innovation, effective management, and business excellence.
