Bob Pittman was the CEO of MTV Networks and the co-founder and programmer who led the team that made MTV what it is today. He is also the co-founder of iHeartMedia and Casa Dragones Tequila. As a board member, Pittman has been on the boards of Electronic Arts, Atari, Excite, 3DO, MTV Networks, HFS/Cendant, and AOL Time Warner.
As an investor, Pittman joined Clear Channel’s predecessor company, iHeartMedia, in November 2010. He was CEO in 2011 and chairman in 2013. As a result of Pittman’s efforts, Clear Channel became known as iHeartMedia, Inc…in September 2014 so that it better reflected its new multiplatform business and bigger mission. Another job Pittman has held: He was the former CEO and chairman of Clear Channel Outdoor, as well as the COO of America Online, and AOL Time Warner. Pittman also used to be the COO of Quantum Media.
During his career, Pittman has also been a radio and TV show host, a marketer, an investor, and a media entrepreneur. He has worked in a lot of different consumer-focused businesses. Sean Parker says that Pittman is the only media mogul who is truly an entrepreneur. In giving him his first “Media Visionary” award, the advertising magazine Adweek called him a “jack of all trades.” Tom Freston, who worked for MTV, called him “the wonder boy of branding.”
When Nickelodeon was a failing preschool network, he made it the most popular channel for older kids. He also made VH-1 and Nick at Night, and he was in charge of MTV Networks’ IPO and international expansion. Steve Ross, the co-chairman and CEO of Warner Communications, said that MTV was the most profitable basic cable network during Pittman’s time there.
MTV was slammed a lot during his time in charge because it didn’t show videos by African American artists at first. After Rick James said that MTV didn’t show enough videos by black artists, such as Michael Jackson and Tina Turner, the network started Yo! MTV Raps to its viewers. The MTV Video Music Awards were first shown on MTV in 1984, and the first Live Aid concert for Ethiopian famine relief was held on June 13, 1985. Pittman was in charge of MTV at the time.
Pittman was named one of the ten most important marketers who changed the way people thought about the United States in 2010. Pittman also won a CFDA Award in 1984 for how MTV changed fashion and popular culture.
Pittman initiated processes that led to Time Warner selling a controlling stake in Six Flags to Boston Ventures in 1995. After that, he left to become CEO of Century 21 Real Estate, where he worked for 10 years.
Pittman and his team used a strategy that also included brand-building and national marketing, a franchise sales organization, and the early use of the Internet as a way to get leads.
At MTV and AOL, Pittman worked on projects that helped the community and philanthropic causes, like Live Aid at MTV and using the Internet to help people learn at AOL. He used to be the chairman of the non-profit Robin Hood Foundation, which fights poverty in New York City. He still serves on the board.
He also used to be the chairman of the New York Public Theater, which fights poverty in New York City. He is also on the board of directors of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy. He used to be on the boards of the Lupus Research Alliance, the New York City Ballet, and the NYU Medical Center, which is a non-profit.
