Known as the “Retail Doctor”, Bob Phibbs is a seasoned business consultant who has worked with hundreds of small and medium-sized firms across a wide range of industries including hospitality, manufacturing, service, restaurant, and retail. Business strategy, customer service, sales, and marketing are some of his areas of his expertise. He speaks to corporate organizations, companies, and business conferences often.
He has over thirty years of experience that began in the trenches of retail and progressed to top management roles. He has also worked as a corporate officer, franchisor, and entrepreneur in various capacities. To deliver practical information in a fun and re-memorable fashion, his presentations are aimed to garner a large number of raving admirers along the road.
With a desire to provide training and motivation to small and medium-sized independent businesses — as well as teach them how to successfully compete in today’s retail market — Bob founded his consultancy firm, The Retail Doctor, in 1994.
Phibbs is the owner of a publishing company and the founder of two profitable businesses. In addition, his years of experience as a conductor have provided him with valuable insight into the process of forming teams.
The author of numerous articles on the subject of how independent stores can succeed, Phibbs has developed innovative strategies to help businesses grow when their consumer base has been threatened. When he does his speeches, he wants business owners to be challenged to look in the mirror and figure out how to compete.
When it comes to supporting businesses of all shapes and sizes, Bob’s proactive, thorough ideas and best practices have proven successful. Bob’s zeal and excitement are the distinguishing characteristics of his presentation abilities. Yamaha, Caswell-Massey, Viking, Brother, LEGO, and True Value are just a few of the well-known retail brands for which he has provided consultation and delivered presentations, as well as some of the country’s most innovative retailers.
For decades after Starbucks debuted a few blocks away, sales at an independent coffee shop had been declining. Phibbs’ affiliation with the coffee shop was one of the most well-publicized accomplishments in his career. In response to the opening of a second Starbucks location only seventy-five feet away, the Retail Doctor was summoned to restructure the business.
During that record-breaking year, sales increased by a whopping 50 percent, with an additional 40 percent the subsequent year. Bob drank up the next big trend while working as the COO and subsequently the CMO for It’s A Grind Coffee, a firm he helped launch. The firm expanded to more than 125 franchised sites nationally, gained widespread attention as the featured coffeehouse on ShowTime’s Weeds, and was named the second-fastest growing company in Los Angeles County for two years in a row by the Los Angeles Business Journal. He also played a key role in the expansion of the Hunter Douglas exclusive Gallery dealer program throughout the United States.
After working in retail since he was 16, Bob has been a guest speaker for a wide range of groups, including the Hobby Industry Association, Myriad Software, True Value Hardware, Aquatech Pool Builders, the National Retail Federation, and the Specialty Coffee Association. He was employed by the nation’s second-largest library system to train its staff on how to merchandise their 42 locations. He is the author of the award-winning book You Can Compete, which serves as the foundation for Do-It-Best Hardware’s How to Beat the Big Box Kit available in their 4400 locations.
As a frequent guest on MSNBC and Fox, and as a contributor to Entrepreneur magazine, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times, he has gained national attention for his work. Phibbs also delivers business makeovers for the Los Angeles Times, among other publications. His award-winning book, The Retail Doctor’s Guide to Growing Your Business, was published by Wiley & Sons in 2010. His follow-up book, The Retail Doctor’s Guide to Growing Your Business, was published by Wiley & Sons in 2010.
