Bear Grylls is famous for his heroic duties performed in the British Special Forces and his hit TV show Man vs Wild. He now travels the world as a motivational speaker where he gives speeches on discipline, overcoming adversity, and hard work.
Grylls was born on the 7th of June, 1974 in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland as Edward Michael Grylls. Grylls was born the youngest of four children in a family that loved the outdoors. A member of Parliament and the daughter of the 14th Earl of Cavan’s daughter, Lady Sarah Grylls was the father of Sir Michael Grylls. Sir Edward Grylls, Grylls’ paternal grandfather, was the first person to ascend Mount Everest without the use of supplemental oxygen.
A divorced mother reared Grylls and his brothers in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight when he was only four years old. His “childhood was quite tumultuous” and he wasn’t “never really adequately cared after,” he has revealed. The Reverend Joe Marshall, the Anglican vicar of Bembridge, married his mother when he was ten years old. Marshall has a special place in Grylls’ heart as a father figure.
Eaton House, Ludgrove School, and Eton College were all stops on Grylls’ educational journey. For his second language studies, he enrolled at Birkbeck College at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
As a result of his marriage to Lord Cannings’s daughter Shara, he became a Conservative Party lord in 1997. Jesse, Marmaduke, and Huckleberry are their three sons.
While in the British Special Forces, Grylls was a member of the 21 SAS Regiment. When he reached the rank of lieutenant commander, he became the regiment’s survival teacher at the tender age of twenty-three.
During a free fall parachuting accident in Zambia in 1998, Grylls survived. At tremendous speed, he impacted the ground with three broken vertebrae, his sternum, and many ribs after his parachute failed to deploy. However, it took him 18 months of therapy after the doctors told him there was no hope for him to walk again.
Grylls joined the Royal Navy Reserve in 2002 and was commissioned as a lieutenant. In the Iraq War, he was a member of the Special Boat Service.
Over 180 nations saw Grylls as presenter of “Man vs. Wild,” a television series that aired in 2003. Grylls became a household name after the program aired for seven seasons.
As Chief Scout of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth in 2009, Grylls became the youngest ever Chief Scout. Until 2015, he served in this capacity.
Grylls’ book, “Mud, Sweat, and Tears: The Autobiography,” was released in 2013.
The University of Cumbria granted Grylls an honorary doctorate in 2014.
“Running Wild with Bear Grylls” premiered on American television in 2016. Celebrities like Ben Stiller, Zac Efron, and Channing Tatum starred in the program, which followed them as they went on survival missions with Bear Grylls.
As part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours, Grylls was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
