All of Barbara Glanz’s life has been dedicated to teaching. Because she was the oldest of four children, she grew up in a tiny town in Iowa and worked as a swim instructor while going to school there. A gifted pianist, she accompanied many of her high school’s singing ensembles and won numerous state competitions. As a child, her father was the Postmaster, and her mother was an Art Teacher, both of whom instilled in her a love of reading.
At the University of Kansas, she studied Music Therapy and Piano, before completing a Bachelor of Arts in English Teaching. In her time at the institution, she was awarded practically every honor it had to offer: Mortar Board, Treasurer of Student Union Activities, Vice President of KU-Y, and the Dean’s List every semester. Finally, she was selected as a Hilltopper in the first edition of the Yearbook, which was the university’s greatest honor for any student.
Barbara Glanz accepted a job as an English teacher at Lyons Township High School in La Grange, Illinois, because she wanted to be close to her future husband, Charlie Glanz, who worked for the Chicago Tribune. They had met the summer before Barbara was set to graduate from college. After just nine months of dating, he proposed. A year later they were married, and Barbara went on to become a well-known English and theatre teacher who even directed David Hasselhof, who subsequently went on to star in the films Knight Rider, Baywatch, and the reality show “America’s Got Talent.”
Barbara, on the other hand, decided to stay at home and raise her children after the birth of their first kid. They had four children, three on Earth and one in Heaven, and a St Bernard puppy, Nanna, who was named after her. It was Barbara’s business plan and goals for those nineteen years to ensure that she provided her children with as many learnings, people, and experiences as possible. A thank-you card had to be written before a present could be opened, and piano lessons had to be taken from the time they were seven years old until they were twelve years old.
At various points throughout the years, she also worked part-time jobs that did not interfere with her family life. For many years, she volunteered in the community to help others learn English as a second language, including at Argonne National Laboratory and Adult Evening School. She also taught college writing courses and communication workshops, and her Intergenerational Sharing Program became a model for other schools across the country. She completed her Master’s degree in Adult Education at Northern Illinois University in 1980 by attending one class per quarter for five years.
Before this, Barbara served on the Board of Trustees of Northern Theological Seminary in Lombard, Illinois, as well as the Core Team of Impact XXI and as the Chairperson of the NSA Community Development Committee. She also served as an advisor to the Loyola University Center for Ethics and Social Justice. There are over 4000 professional speakers in the world that belong to the National Speakers Association. She served a three-year term as its director.
It was created by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, and she currently serves as a member of the Advisory Cabinet for Guideposts International. She also serves on the Board of Ken Blanchard’s Lead Like Jesus Foundation. Along with belonging to the National Speakers Association, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Kappa Delta Pi (a professional honor society), and the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity (an honorary fraternity), she has also been recognized by several other organizations for her work as a speaker and trainer.
Three additional “claims to fame” for Barbara include the fact that her great-grandfather laid the cornerstone for Page, Arizona, which is named after him; she played the piano on “Talent Sprouts”; and she directed David Hasselhof of Knight Rider, Baywatch, and American’s Got Talent fame in his first high-school play!
