Six times while in office, Utah was named one of the best-run states in the United States. The most recent time was on the front page of a USA Today report in June 2003. During Governor Leavitt’s time in office, 28 tax cuts worth $1.8 billion have been made. During Utah’s longest-lasting economic growth, one of every four jobs was created.
Leavitt is the first governor in the country to lead the move to competency-based learning. He has increased school choice & accountability, cut class sizes, & made education the top funding priority for the state government. He also helped start Western Governors University, the first online, competency-based university with national and regional accreditation.
