Speaker Bio

Meg Whitman is a highly-sought keynote speaker and expert covering such topics as business growth, e-commerce, leadership, and international business. She is a best-selling author, consultant, media pundit, and thought-leader who has spoken at many conferences around the world where she gives leaders the skills they need to deal with fast, big changes in society, the workplace, and education.

Meg Whitman is hired to speak at events and conferences where she can give expertise on important global business affairs. She got her bachelor’s degree in economics from Princeton University in 1977 and her master’s degree in business administration from Harvard University in 1979. She worked as a brand manager for Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1979 to 1981. After moving to California with her husband in 1981, she worked as a vice president at the consulting firm Bain & Co. until 1989. From 1989 to 1992, Whitman was the senior vice president of marketing for the consumer products unit of the Walt Disney Company. During this time, she was a big reason why the company bought Discover magazine.

In 1992, she moved to Boston and became president of the children’s shoe company Stride Rite. She left Stride Rite in 1995 to become the CEO of Florists Transworld Delivery (FTD), an organization of industrial florists. Staff and member florists were strongly against Whitman’s plan to sell FTD to a private company. In 1997, she quit FTD to become the general manager of Hasbro’s Playskool, which makes toys and games.

When a corporate headhunter asked Whitman in 1998 if she would be interested in running the new online auction site eBay, she said no. She decided to take the job of eBay’s president and CEO after visiting the company’s headquarters and hearing from many loyal users.

In her new job, Whitman’s first task was to get the company ready for its first public offering (IPO), which happened in September 1998. As a result of her efforts to make eBay’s Web pages more colorful and to separate pornographic and gun sales into separate, age-restricted sites, eBay later banned the sale of cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, animals, and body parts. They also stopped letting people auction off guns.

Whitman’s coworkers say that she was “relentlessly optimistic” and that her positive attitude set her apart from other executives. Under her direction, eBay grew steadily over the next few years. She grew eBay from a small business with a few dozen people to a huge company with about 15,000 employees and billions of dollars in sales when many Internet businesses had failed or were struggling to stay alive. Whitman quit her job as CEO of eBay in 2008.

Whitman, a Republican, was the national co-chair for Sen. John McCain’s campaign in 2008. The following year, she said she would run for governor of California. Her campaign season cost a record-breaking $81 million, and in June 2010, the Republican party gave her their nomination for governor. Jerry Brown, on the other hand, won that election in November and beat her.

At the start of 2011, Whitman became a member of the Hewlett-Packard board of directors. Later that year, the tech company made her president and chief executive officer. In 2015, she was in charge of HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, which were in charge of PCs and printers. Whitman served as CEO of the second company, but in November 2017, it was announced that she would leave the job in early 2018. Later, she officially joined Jeffrey Katzenberg’s media company, NewTV, which later changed its name to Quibi and focused on short videos for mobile devices. The application went live in April 2020. But because of its problems, Quibi was going to close in October.

Meg Whitman was born in Spring Harbor, New York, on August 4, 1956. She is an American businesswoman and politician. From 1998 to 2008, she was president and CEO of the online auction site eBay. From 2011 to 2015, she was president and CEO of the tech company Hewlett Packard. She was the CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise from 2015 to 2018 when the company was restructured.
