She is an American economist who is presently the Wallace Brett Donham Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, is the chair of the Leadership Initiative. Hill is among the leading experts on leadership. She is also co-creator of the Innovation Quotient, co-author of “Collective Genius: The Art and Practice of Leading Innovation,” and co-founder of Paradox Strategies.
Hill’s research is mostly about how to make innovative leaders, how to implement global strategies, how to make innovative organizations and ecosystems, and what the board’s role is in regulating innovation. Her latest book, “Collective Genius: The Art and Practice of Leading Innovation,” is one of her highly regarded leadership books and essays (Harvard Business Review Press, 2014). “Collective Genius” won the Axiom Business Book Award’s Gold Medal for Leadership, and Business Insider called it one of “The 20 Best Business Books” of 2014.
In 2015, Hill and her co-authors were given the first Warren Bennis Prize for the Harvard Business Review article “Collective Genius,” based on the book. She wrote the HBS Press Pocket Mentor series Managing Up, Hiring, Becoming a New Manager, and Negotiating Outcomes. Hill is also a co-author of “Being the Boss.”
Linda A. Hill has created some innovative learning programs for managers. These include Breakthrough Leadership, which won the Brandon Hall Group Award for Best Advance in Unique Learning Technology, and High-Performance Management, which won an award for its multimedia management development program.In 2021 and 2013, Thinkers50 named her one of the top ten management thinkers in the world, and in 2015, she won the Thinkers50 Innovation Award.
Hill has led some HBS Executive Education programs, such as the Young Presidents Organization Presidents’ Seminar, the High Potentials Leadership Program, and Leading and Building a Culture of Innovation. She also worked as the course director for the new Leadership and Organizational Behavior MBA course while it was being made.
Linda Hill is on the ArtCenter College of Design Board of Trustees, the Board of Directors for Relay Therapeutics, and the Team8 Fintech Strategic Committee. She is on the advisory boards of many organizations, such as the American Repertory Theater, the Aspen Institute Business and Society Program, Calit2, Eight Inc., the Morgan Stanley Institute for Sustainable Investing, and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research.
She is a Special Representative of Bryn Mawr College’s Board of Trustees. She sits on the board of Global Citizens Initiative, Inc. Hill has worked on the boards of Eaton Corporation, State Street Corporation, Harvard Business Publishing, and Bridgespan Group. In the past, she has also worked as a trustee for Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund USA and The Rockefeller Foundation.
After completing a post-doctoral research program at Harvard Business School, Hill got a Ph.D. in behavioral sciences from the University of Chicago. She has a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Bryn Mawr College and a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology from the University of Chicago.
