Jackie Joyner-Kersee is a former Olympic track and field athlete, best-selling author, motivational speaker, and humanitarian. American track and field legend Jackie Joyner-Kersee has just retired, but her legacy continues to loom large. As of right now, she owns both the heptathlon and pentathlon records, as well as the Olympic heptathlon record. She has six Olympic medals to her name, three of which are gold and one of which is silver.
Joyner’s birth date In East St. Louis, Illinois, on March 3rd, 1962, a boy named Kersee was born. She was the oldest of seven children when she was born. Her father, Mattie Joyner, worked in manufacturing, and her mother, Althea Joyner, was a schoolteacher. Joyner-Kersee began playing basketball at the age of eight and soon ascended to the top of the game. At East St. Louis Lincoln High School, she was a star player on the basketball team. When it came to long, triple, and high jumping she set state records in each of those events as well.
Upon graduating from high school, Joyner-Kersee was offered a basketball scholarship at the University of California, Los Angeles. There was a graduation ceremony, and he received his diploma. It wasn’t until 1984 that she won the NCAA long-jump championship. A year after breaking a new world record in the heptathlon, she won gold at Seoul’s Olympics in 1988.
Joyner-Kersee continued her extraordinary run of success by winning gold in the heptathlon and the long jump at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. In addition to the 400-meter dash, she won a bronze medal. Following her retirement from competitive sports in 1992, she made a triumphant comeback in 1996, taking home a bronze medal in the heptathlon event at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.
Her foundation, the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, aims to aid poor children and teenagers, one of her numerous humanitarian efforts. Her life experience is chronicled in her best-selling book, A Kind of Grace.
