As a corporate leader, author, and keynote speaker, Howard Putnam (born December 12, 1934) is a well-known American figure who served as CEO of Braniff International Airways, and from 1994 to 1996, he was CEO of Vanguard Airlines.
Putnam grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, but was born in Omaha, Nebraska. At the University of Iowa in 1956, he received his MBA with an emphasis in business administration. In Des Moines, he started working in the airline sector as an American Airlines sales representative.
Braniff International Airways was in financial trouble when Putnam was hired in 1968 to turn things around. As president and CEO, he is widely credited with bringing the airline around and making it profitable again. After a dispute with the board of directors, he resigned from Braniff in 1971.
He started Vanguard Airlines, a low-cost airline, in 1994 and remained as its CEO until his retirement in 2012. The airline went out of business in 2000 after he left Vanguard in 1996.

In 1994, he founded Vanguard Airlines, a low-cost airline, and served as CEO until 2012. Having departed Vanguard in 1996, the airline was forced to shut its doors in 2000.
