Speaker Bio

After a distinguished career in business, academia, and international development, Dr. David C. Korten decided to leave the establishment and work only with public interest citizen action organisations.  Aside from being a co-founder or board chair of the YES! Magazine, co-chair of its New Economy Working Groups, and president of  Living Parts of the economy Forum, he’s also a member of Club of Rome, a former board member of a Business Alliance for the Local Living Economies, and an associate of International Forum on the  Globalization.

Korten was truly a visionary whose mission was helping to strengthen developing nations through business and economic development. To accomplish this goal, he took a practical approach by going where the people were by setting up economic programs that would offer alternatives for growth and development in the communities who needed it most. Korten earned his MBA and PhD degrees at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

He completed his military service during the Vietnam War as a captain in the U.S. Air Force and was held up to be a shining example for his fellow officers during tough missions that included directing operations at the Special Air Warfare School, Air Force headquarters command, and creating peace talks for U.S. officials within highly secure areas of Washington D.C., namely at the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Korten then spent five and a half years attending the Harvard University Graduate School of Business where he taught in their middle management, MBA, and doctoral programs during his time at Harvard. It was there that Dr. Korten had the opportunity to offer guidance to both American and foreign graduate students as well as students who were on nightly pursuing a PhD at this institution of higher learning while also being invited to speak at various institutions such as the Central American Management Institute located in Nicaragua.

In this book, Korten basically analyzed the problems of the existing economic system with its emphasis on the pursuit of ever-greater economic growth. He argues that the traditional economic paradigm is inherently flawed, as the current system is built on assumptions (such as endless economic growth) that are in conflict with ecological and human realities. Korten argues that a paradigm shift is necessary, and lays out the basic concepts of a new economic paradigm in which we live in a world of ecological limits, where well-being and sustainability are more important than ever-increasing economic growth.

Korten’s latest book outlines how the new economy is emerging. In this new economy, ownership is defined as the control of productive assets, aligned with the interests of the community where the assets are based. This is a very important point, as it puts the community at the center of a new economy. Korten believes that the emerging economy is being created by ordinary people, around the world.

He says, “I believe that this emerging economy is being created by ordinary people, in communities all over the world, responding to conditions that have pushed their livelihoods to the edge. They are taking control of the forces that dominate their lives, capturing and redirecting the power that once was used to control them.” He says, “The most powerful force in the new economy is the emergence of an ownership revolution. The engine of this revolution is the same basic human need that propelled the property revolution. That need is the need to be free, to release the creative power of our imagination, to be free to choose the course of our own lives and to live as we choose.”

Korten’s book documents the consolidation since 1995 of financial and corporate power at the expense of democracy, people, communities and the planet. He documents how the trend toward concentration of corporate and financial power has been accompanied by a shift of political power from corrupt, undemocratic nation-states to corrupt, undemocratic global institutions, including the World Trade Organization, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Economic Forum.
