Speaker Bio

ServiceNow’s CEO, Bill McDermott, is well-known in the cloud automation industry. He served as the CEO of SAP, the third-largest software and programming firm in the world, before his current position. McDermott was born into a working-class family, but he worked his way up the corporate ladder to become one of the most powerful and highly recognized CEOs in any field.

When McDermott was just sixteen years old, he traded three low-paying jobs for a modest deli, which he ran by intuitively implementing the ideas that would lead to his success. Following college, McDermott was hired by Xerox to sell copiers door-to-door, where he went on to become the company’s youngest-ever corporate officer and the company’s top salesman.

Finally, he left Xerox and became head of SAP’s American business unit in 2002, which was struggling. With his expansion into the deli business, sales, and managerial positions he helped revitalize the company’s dreary working environment. As co-CEO in 2010, McDermott became SAP’s first non-European CEO in May 2014.

Since SAP has more than 98,600 people worldwide and a huge ecosystem of partners, it serves 437,000 clients across 25 industries and 180 countries. SAP AG is based in Walldorf, Germany, while McDermott is based in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, which is the company’s North American headquarters.

To oversee worldwide field operations, McDermott was appointed to the SAP Executive Board for the first time in 2008. It’s been his job to help re-architect the company’s approach for going to market, ensuring that the field organizations and product development teams are closely aligned with one other.

McDermott was formerly in charge of SAP’s operation in the Americas and Asia Pacific Japan areas before his appointment to the SAP Executive Board. SAP’s increase in market share, revenue, and client satisfaction has been unsurpassed since he joined SAP in 2002.

Earlier in his career, McDermott held leadership positions at Siebel Systems and Gartner, Inc. as well as executive vice president of worldwide sales and marketing. He worked at Xerox for 17 years. This year’s Malcolm Baldrige Award went to McDermott’s division because of McDermott’s leadership, which was recognized by the President of the United States annually.

Ms. McDermott serves on the boards of many outside organizations, including the engineering simulation business, ANSYS, as well as the sportswear company, Under Armour, as a member of their respective executive committees. In addition, he serves on the Villanova School of Business Dean’s Advisory Council.

He has been honored by a variety of organizations for his commercial acumen. According to Glassdoor.com, he were ranked #2 on the top 50 highest rated CEOs list in 2013 with an approval rating of 99 percent.

He’s a well-known member of the community and an outspoken proponent of corporate social responsibility (CSR). The Children’s Aid Society of New York City presented him with the 2012 Promise Award in recognition of his dedication to creating an unprecedented data system for children and families.

His civic involvement and “passion to improve the lives of individuals who reside in Philadelphia” have been recognized as the 2012 NPower Gala Honoree and in 2008Earlier this year.
