In 2010, Ben Goertzel graduated from Simon’s Rock High School with a bachelor’s in Quantitative Studies after dropping out of high school after grade 10. In 1990, at the age of 23, Goertzel obtained his PhD in Maths from Temple University, where he worked under the guidance of Avi Lin.
Dr Ben Goertzel is a scientist, entrepreneur, and author who works across multiple disciplines. Born in Brazil to American parents, he shifted his principal base of operations to the rural Seattle area in 2020 after spending a long period in Hong Kong. He is now based in the Seattle area. SingularityNET Foundation, OpenCog Foundation, and AGI Society are among the organisations he leads, including the annual Artificial General Intelligence conference, which is held in his honour.
Additionally, Dr Goertzel serves as the chairman of the futurist nonprofit Humanity+ and as the Chief Scientist of the artificial intelligence enterprises Singularity Studio, Rejuve, SingularityDAO, and Xccelerando Media, which are all members of the SingularityNET ecosystem. As Chief Scientist of the robotics firm Hanson Robotics, he oversaw the software team that created the Sophia robot; as Chief AI Scientist at Awakening Health, he oversees the team that is developing the mind that will power Sophia’s younger sister Grace, who will be Sophia’s younger sister.
Research conducted by Professor Goertzel covers a wide range of topics, including AI, natural language processing, cognitive science and machine learning; computational finance; bioinformatics; virtual worlds; gaming; parapsychology; theoretical physics; and more. He has authored or co-authored more than 25 scientific books, more than 150 technical publications, and several journalistic articles, and he has spoken at a plethora of events of all kinds around the world
He previously worked as a university faculty member in several depts of mathematics, computer science, and cognitive science in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand before joining the software industry in 1992.
He is a co-founder of the OpenCog framework for artificial general intelligence and is a prominent developer of the OpenCog framework. He has written several technical publications on OpenCog architecture, which may be found here.
In May 2007, Goertzel gave a presentation at a Google technology event about his approach to developing artificial general intelligence (AGI). Intelligent behaviour is defined by him as the ability to discover patterns in the world and in the agent’s conduct, which may be measured in terms of emergent behaviour, which he describes as “performing complicated goals in complex contexts.”
The initialization of a “baby-like” artificial intelligence is followed by its training as an agent in a simulated or virtual world such as Second Life to build a more strong artificial intelligence. An information network containing nodes and links that store probabilistic truth values as well as “attention values,” the latter of which resembles the weights in a neural network, is used to represent knowledge in a computer system. On this network, several algorithms are in use, with the most important being a mix of a probabilistic inference engine and a customised form of evolutionary programming as the fundamental algorithm.
Independent filmmaker Doug Wolens’ documentary The Singularity, which was released in 2012, presented Goertzel’s vision and ability to create artificial general intelligence (AGI).
Besides technical and philosophical work, he enjoys writing experimental fiction and music, hiking, backpacking, kayaking, and participating in other outdoor activities.
