Speaker Bio

Barb Stegemann’s business vision was sparked by the death of her best friend, a soldier, in Afghanistan. Barb’s best buddy was gravely injured in the conflict. In recognition of the importance of assisting Afghanistan’s economy to bring stability to the country’s people, Stegemann founded The 7 Virtues, a firm that sources organic, fair trade essential oils from nations that are facing turbulence (such as Afghanistan, Haiti, the Middle East, and Rwanda).

Many Canadians are familiar with Stegemann’s name because of her appearance on CBC television’s Dragons’ Den (the Canadian equivalent of Shark Tank) when she becomes the first woman from Atlantic Canada to receive a venture-capital agreement for her company, The 7 Virtues Beauty. As a result of her social enterprise, she went on to be named the “Top Game Changer” in the history of the popular television show for the first time.

In the years since, Stegemann has been named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada, received the APEC Women and the Economy Summit Award from the United States Department of State, received the Ernst & Young “Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Emerging Entrepreneur category,” was named one of Profit Guide magazine’s “Top 30 Cool and Fabulous Canadian Entrepreneurs,” received the 2019 John C. Maxwell Transformative Leadership Award, and was also named the first female Honorary Colo of the University.

Stegemann is the author of the New York Times best-seller “7 Virtues of a Philosopher Queen”, a book that has inspired women (and men) to start living their dreams. ‘Perfume War’ is a feature-length documentary that tells the inspiring narrative of her triumph over hardship through the force of stoic wisdom. The film tells the story of Stegemann’s entrepreneurial journey and has won numerous awards, including Best Humanitarian Film at the Sedona Film Festival in Arizona and the Vanguard Award for cutting-edge ideologies at the Artemis Film Festival in Santa Monica, California.

As one of four finalists for Jon Maxwell’s Transformational Leadership Award in 2019, she was recognized for her achievements.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of King’s College before moving to Toronto. The University of New Brunswick awarded her an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree in recognition of her contributions. She was also recognized for her achievements as one of four finalists for Jon Maxwell’s Transformational Leadership Award in 2019.

Barb is also a graduate of the Sephora Accelerate Cohort, where she worked on the development of her new contemporary range of cosmetics and skincare. Her brand prompted the global cosmetics behemoth to develop a new Clean & Conscious section in their USA locations, which is now open to the public.

Barb is regularly featured in Media outlets such as CNN, BBC, the Sunday Times, Bloomberg, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Telegraph Magazine, Tatler, the Globe and Mail, and The Wall Street Journal.
