Alexis Ohanian embraces disruption and co-founded the social media site Reddit in his University of Virginia dorm and launched the venture after graduation. Ohanian’s entrepreneurial path, which culminated in the sale of the legendary firm for millions of dollars, serves as a business school study case and roadmap for other entrepreneurs.
Reddit.com has grown to become one of the most popular websites in the United States, with a market capitalization of more than $10 billion. Conde Nast acquired the company in 2006 after previously being sponsored by Y Combinator in 2005. In 2014, Ohanian returned to the firm as executive chairman to assist in the revival of the now-independent company. Without the Permission, his national blockbuster, tells a good deal of the narrative of how it all began.
When he left Reddit in 2016, he took over as CEO of the venture capital company he co-founded, Initialized Ventures, which he grew to a market capitalization of $100 billion by making early investments in businesses such as Coinbase, Open door, Instacart, Patreon, as well as Ro. Apart from co-founding Reddit.com, he has played an important role in the development of other successful internet enterprises, such as Hipmunk and BreadPig.com Ohanian has invested in and counseled over two hundred technology firms over his career, and he was a founding partner of Y Combinator.
After stepping down from his position on Reddit’s Board of Directors in June 2020, in protest and sympathy with the national clamour for social justice, Ohanian asked his firm to nominate a Black candidate to take his place on the Board of Directors.
