Willink grew up in Torrance, California, in the San Fernando Valley. His mother, in addition to being a teacher, worked as a cop’s wife. Two of his older sisters still live at home with him. Willink was a wrestling and football athlete in high school. He left the University of San Diego a year into his scholarship to join the Navy.

For more than two decades, Willink has served as a Navy SEAL, having been commissioned in 1991. During the Battle of Ramadi in 2006, he served in a variety of leadership capacities with SEAL Team Three, most notably as commander of Task Unit Bruiser. Willink received the Silver and Bronze Stars for valor during combat.

Willink founded Echelon Front, a leadership consulting business, when he retired from the Navy in 2010. Extensive Ownership: How Navy SEALs Lead and Win was co-authored with Leif Babin by the two of them.

As a public speaker, he has gained a loyal following for his knowledge in a wide variety of subjects, including military strategy and leadership and management. The Joe Rogan Experience and Tim Ferriss’ podcasts, to name a few, have also included him on their shows.

The San Fernando Valley is where Willink grew up in Torrance, California. In addition to his father’s job as a cop, his mother also worked as a teacher. This younger brother has two elder sisters who live at home. As a high school student, Willink was a wrestling and football player. A year into his scholarship at the University of San Diego, he departed to join the Navy.

A Navy SEAL since 1992, Willink was commissioned as an officer in 1991. As commander of SEAL Team Three’s Task Unit Bruiser during the fight of Ramadi in 2006, he had several leadership roles in the SEAL Team. In battle, Willink was awarded the Silver and Bronze Stars.

Following his retirement from the Navy in 2010, Willink started a leadership consulting firm called Echelon Front. It was with Leif Babin that he co-authored the book Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win.

His topics of expertise range from leadership and management to military strategy and have earned him a devoted following as a public speaker. Other podcast appearances include The Joe Rogan Experience and Tim Ferriss’ podcasts, among others.
