Jane Marie Chen, co-founder and CEO of the social enterprise Embrace wants to help the 15 million premature and low birth weight babies born yearly by using a low-cost newborn warmer. People think the Embrace infant warmer, which costs 1% of what a standard incubator does, has helped more than 250,000 babies. Embrace Innovations has just put on the US market a new line of baby products called Little Lotus Baby. These products use NASA-inspired technology to keep kids at the right temperature to sleep better. With its “buy-one, give-one” campaign, every Embrace baby warmer sold helps a child in a developing country.
Before joining Embrace, Chen worked with nonprofits to help solve health problems in developing countries. She worked with the Clinton Foundation’s HIV/AIDS Initiative in Tanzania as the Program Director of a new HIV/AIDS non-governmental organization in China. She also worked for the Monitor Group as a management consultant, advising Fortune 500 companies.
Chen was named one of the 30 Most Influential People by Forbes in 2011. He has also spoken at TED events. She was included in Stanford’s “Tradition of Innovation,” and Pomona College called her the Inspiring Young Alumni of the Year. Chen has spoken at the Skoll World Forum and the World Economic Forum, among other places. Chen is a fellow of TED, Rainer Arnhold, and Echoing Green. The Economist Innovation Award was given to Chen and the other co-founders of Embrace in 2013. Chen went to Harvard Kennedy School of Government for his master’s in public administration and Stanford Graduate School of Business for his master’s in business administration.
