Elatia Abate is an entrepreneur, futurist, educator, and keynote speaker covering such topics as the future of work and workplace culture. She started the Future of Now to help people and organisations thrive in the face of change and prepare for a dynamic future. She has advised or consulted for businesses like Price water house Coopers, UniGroup, Verizon, the University of Arizona, and the University of Cincinnati.
She started her journey in January 2017 by putting all of her things in storage except what could fit in a bring bag. She did this to learn about how technology is changing work and our world of work, to understand the economics of the industrial revolution and incredibly rapid change, and to learn from people who are experts at managing change.
She hoped that if she had anything to teach people as we try to figure out how to deal with the big changes this exponential age has brought. After about a year on the road, she had the chance to start talking about what she had learned on the TEDx stage. That was the start of her professional life in researching the future.
Next, in September 2020, she put a lot of effort into making connections and being part of a community. She was interested in how the epidemic may affect our relationships. Were the parades for social equality and the Black Lives Matter movement meant to be the turning points that ended racism and inequity. In her own words…”Are we going to be able to come together as a country or planet after so much fighting and being on our own? I decided to start up a chat with a few other people.”
The answer changed her whole life. She talked to people from 24 different countries for 161 hours. There was an applicant for mayor of New York City, as well as CEOs of publicly traded companies, teachers, business people, and interns.
Even though these talks covered many different topics, the reality that eighty percent of them seemed to be about resilience and psychological health was what stuck with her the most. Because of this event, she developed the Restorative Resilience curriculum which she now teaches.
In 10 to 15 years, she thinks it will be important for the companies to provide a great culture with clearly defined, talked about, and lived-out values. In addition to money, they need to give people strong reasons to want to work there.
The concepts of the task, a job, and work opportunities will have changed in big ways. Most of the time, the business partnership will turn into something that looks like non-monogamy with mutual consent. There are one or more side jobs or gigs besides its main client or employer. If most jobs in the past were salaried, most jobs in the future would be run by people on their own.
Also, more and more people will work side by side with robots. A German company called Robotise makes and sells service robots that are now used in hotels and healthcare facilities. These robots are used along with human housekeepers, doctors, and nurses.
We might expect that synchronization work will be the norm for most innovative companies in the long run. Even though there will be times when people have to meet in person, companies are using asynchronous strategies more and more. In reality, Automattic Inc., the company that started WordPress, was made as a synchronization organization. This is a great example of how other companies should deal with these changes.
